The Akishima Citizen Whale Festival began in commemoration of the fact that a fossil of a whale (Akishima Whale) from about two to five million years ago was discovered in Akishima City, located far from the sea coast, in 1961. Featuring a parade with various performances by local groups, the festival is held annually around August.
